The Stolen Generations

12 10 2010

LESSON AIMS:  To gain an understanding of what is the “Stolen Generation”.  Who this policy would impact on?  Consequences of the future.

TASKS:  Watch the and read all the media provided.

This first video is a scene from “Rabbit Proof Fence”  Although it is a movie, many reports state how real the scene was to our history.

Next go to the website http://www.racismnoway.com.au

  • Click on the classroom tab.
  • Click on fact sheets and view all.
  • By scrolling down, locate and read through the “Terra Nullius” fact sheet and “The Stolen Generations” fact sheet.

This next video is a lady recalling when she was taken from her mother.  She also shares her thoughts about Kevin Rudd’s apology.

I was unable to link this page, so you will need to go to google and type in “Lola Edwards”  A video titled “I was holding onto mums dress” should come up. View this video.

Now go to the website http://www.creativespirits.info

  • Click on Aboriginal Culture
  • Politics and Media
  • Finally click on Stolen Generation Stories.
  • Read through a couple of recounts about people who were removed from their families.

The following video is the Apology made from Kevin Rudd in 2009.

This video is the reaction of the Parliament and the people outside Parliament house.

Now think of some points you would like to share with the class about what you have learnt.

It is not a nice part of Australian History, but it is our History.
